My favorite photos always seem to be taken at the spur of the moment, with no time to set exposure or composition. I shot this picture of now-Sgt. Kenneth Butler during a punk rock show under the bridge at Anchor Park (now Heritage/Pioneer Park). I was just running around, snapping pictures during the sets with my first true SLR, the Canon Rebel 2000. I used to carry a huge sack of film in my camera bag, and would make multiple trips to Helena Photo Center (now defunct) and Walmart to get my prints processed every week. Times were a lot simpler back then – I didn’t have kids or a mortgage, and I took pictures of all the fun we had – mattress luging, party-crashing, stairway sledding – you get the idea.
I love pictures like the photo above of Sgt. Butler; simple and just living in the moment; something photography is all about.
